should have invited everyone humanly possible, regardless of cost. We are doing these companies a favour, don't underestimate their desire to be at the fair and to- contribute financially to it. As | understand it, the budget for the fair was $500, far less than it shouldbe for an important event like this, and | was told that the person running the fair was did not invite more companies to the fair because table rental was $35 a piece - for the love of God, take some bloody tables out of the classrooms or from the cafeteria. Just get the job done well. We need someone who is aggresive and is working for the students. Linked to the career fair issue the need for a job placement service to help graduating students get jobs(in addition to the co-op centre). The goal of this University was to educate students in the North and keep them in the North.Well, you can educate them ‘til there blue, but if they can't get a job then this education is useless to them in P.G. and they will go elsewhere. Where would the funding come from fo the “improved” career fair? | would like to see a reduction in undergrad society fees and see this amount used to fund a proper, multi-day career fair. If the undergrad society has enought money to buy a $1500 fax machine and $600 each for file cabinets, then they obviously have more money than they need. Another issue | would like to see brought forward is scholarships. | would like to see more scholarships for non-Northern students. As well, why hasn't someone approached the multitude of major companies in this town for scholarships? Surely Cosico, the car dealerships and Sears, Zellers could make contributions to. our - scholarship collection. Finally, | would like to see the students’ disatisfaction, w/r/t the Wintergarden. trough, receive the attention necessary to ensure that the company that is operating it now makes some changes. The exceptional service that they offer, the student- oriented prices they give and the quality and pride that they put into the food combines for sucha pleasant eating experience. Thank you for your time. Sincerly, Sean Nardi Shannon Whissell - Senate Student for Senate The job of the senate is to ensure that the academic needs of all students of UNBC are met. The Senate makes decisions concerning graduation requirements, student facilities, the library, and academic probation. Unfortunately, many students are unaware of the extent to which the senate's academic policies affect them. It is my hope that students will become more aware of how they are affected by UNBC’s academic policies. | believe senate should encourage the various programs to offer courses which meet the student's needs for graduation and for future employment. In addition, | think thdt academic success is related to their overall achievement and accomplishments of students. As a mature student, | feel | have the training to help guide the decision making process necessary to improving the academic success of students here at UNBC. | am an experienced tutor, both here at UNBC and in a volunteer capacity in the community, and | . recognize the multiple factors which influence a rewarding and successful academic career. As someone who grew up in Northern BC, | recognize the importance of the increasing academic options for Northern students, and | feel that by being involved in sencte | can help ensure that UNBC graduates are respected for the education they have received.. My past involvement with other Pp Orsi she-C Onel Ginny institutions also gives me insight into the importance of inter- institution relations, particularly in the sharing of resources for students and the recognition of transfer credits. Elizabete M Rocha - senate Given that the duties of the senate encompass such a broad range of issues, it has the potential to benefit students in various ways. For example, to provide necessary services in term of library access and facilites and to ensure that an adequate breadth of courses are being offered by which students will not only learn from their academic careers but also enjoy them. By having student members on the senate committee, it ensures that student concerns will be represented and this can only serve to benefit the student body. My personal interests are in ensuring that student services are upheld. I'm referring to anything from photocopy services to registration and course selection procedures. | suppose in terms of new ideas, |’d like to see the establishment of an ombudsperson to represent student concerns. These are common at other universities and should ‘be instituted at UNBC. Page 11 -- Over The Edge -- Api-1 1, 1997 | have previously held various committee positions. During my undergraduate years at UBC | sat on the Student Residents’ Association which was in charge of being a liason for student concerns to the housing office. | was also involved in the Psycholgy Students’ Association where my primary responsibility was social co-ordinating (which meant pouring a lot of: beer). Most recently, at UNBC, | have been involved in the Graduate Students' Society and attend weekly committee meetings. Apart from the ‘formal’ experience, | have completed an undergraduate degree . and am currently enrolled in a graduate program here and so | think | am aware of and sensitive to student concerns from both angles. Charles Hogg - Senate The senate, as an academic governing body, helps us because we are there providing input and making sure the decisions are fair. The importance of this representation cannot be downplayed. When issues about academic appeals, the budget, scholarships, the library or other areas come up, there is no guarantee that the decision will be in the best interests of the student body. Student representation to the senate provides an important check on these decisions and gives us direct access to the main body governing of our academic careers. There are two focuses | would bring to the senate: a commitment to building a solid future for UNBC and a commitment to making sure you are informed about the activities of the senate. | will work to building a solid future for UNBC by improving access to scholarships, bursaries and other awards, by working to freeze (or slow considerably) unfair increases to our studen fees, by working to improve’ the _ library collection and our access to all of its resources and by fighting to maintain the integrity and diversity of all the programs at UNBC in the face of budget cuts. | also recognize that excellent communication is vital to excellent public service. To this end, if elected senator, | will create a web page that informs students about the activities of their, student senators and tells them about important senate decisions. | will also follow in the footsteps of senate predecessors by writing a column for every issue of our student newspaper. “And finally | will work hard to seek the opinions of students on a regular basis. For a candidate committed to the future of UNBC and committed to your involvement in that future, elect Charles Hogg to the senate. | believe there are many things that make me, qualified to be a UNBC student senator. First, | have provided excellent. student representation to both the Political Science Program and the Faculty of Management and Administration over the past yeor. | am also a founding member and president of the Political Science Student Association, which has worked hard to ensure that all students opinions and interests are met by the program. | am alsoa competitive and. accomplished debater, and will not be afraid to= confront other senators on your behalf. Over all | have the experience and expertise required to represent your interests in the Senate.
