He didn’t know why but he had the feeling he was being watched by the man he was seeking. At any moment a bullet might fly out of the darkness and strike him down. He tightened his grip on his weapon. The car, now slowed down, swung into the driveway of Livingston’s garage. In the dim light, Sheriff Ripke noted that the machine seemed to be new. That couldn’t be driven by Van. According to reports he had left the scene of the shooting in an old Ford. The car must belong to Otto Livingston and he was probably re- turning from a dance at Stillwater Inn, a short distance from Lake House. Ripke cautioned Adams about showing his weapon. The two men now moved for- ward to the car which was now standing, its motor silent. The sheriff called out. “Hello Otto.” Ripke moved forward. He saw a shadowy form near the wall of the garage. The light was deceptive, but there was enough to enable the sheriff to see the figure of a man drop to his knees. The officer stopped, his pulse quickening. He knew the trick. The man was kneeling low so he could get a view against the skyline. Ripke drew his gun. He knew the man before him was George Van. And he also knew he was at the killer’s mercy. He heard the click of rifle mechan‘sm. His stomach seemed to swirl. He didn’t have a chance. Then from out of the darkness of the garage came a voice. “Don’t shoot, George. don’t shoot.” The kneeling figure leaped to its feet and vanished into the bush. A moment later Otto Livingston appeared from the garage. Livingstone was white and shaking. “Boys,” he said, his voice registering nervousness. “That was George Van. He made me pick him up and drive him here. It’s a wonder he didn’t get the three of you.” The sheriff nodded. “He would have if you hadn't called Otto,” he said. “Wed better get after him.” For God’s sake THE MURDERER ESCAPES “Tt was after daylight when the sheriff and his men ceased beating the bush.
