Fred and Ernie had not seen each other for 54 years, When curious neighbours questioned the closeness of the family bonds, they were re- minded that everything is relative since there is a clan trad- ition of living to be in their 90's. A warm sun pulsing in a big blue sky. The dew steaming off the grass. Bouncy breezes, awake and lively, chasing each other through light and shadow like a clutch of puppies. _ And the whole blooming Smiling Meadow danced and buzzed and thumped and sang! “Such a day” rumbled Homer Nathaniel Sweet- water Brown. “Mmm.” sighed Bullseye, who was lazily coiled up on Homer’s hump cracking and eating sunflower seeds. Homer Nathaniel Sweetwater Brown was a Camel of vast integrity! and Bullseye was dainty, darling little ' green and black Garter Snake. They were the very best of friends, and they took the very best care of each other! Homer Nathaniel took care not to tread upon Bullseye in the green grass, and Bullseye took the very best of care not to be treaded upon in the green grass, It was a friend- ship founded in the very best of mutual esteem and unsul- lied respectful trust. ‘And so, with all that under their comfortable and contented belts (or hides), they stood or reclined, or sauntered around the meadow blinking and beaming in the sun, nibbling on grass, or yawning, or eating sunflower seeds, or whistling, or just anything they wanted to do. Rain was gone, night was over and the day was good. Summer was here and everything felt, looked, and acted easy. Like the weather does in the work week! That is until, Dizzy Izzy Zitts buzzed the meadow and made the scene. He was a loveable little Mosquito whose only ambition in life was to establish a new air speed record for 2 or 4 winged denizens of the Feerfull Forest or The Smiling Meadow’. He owned a little sport- ing goods store that sold pine wax, dandylion fluff, and oil of strawberries. He flew slowly around the meadow testing the — air very carefully, sensing stinger quiver and membrane ripple. He squinted at the sky, he sampled ground level humidity, he flew upside down to estimate turbulence, he looked for crosswinds, air pockets and bouncy breezes. It was good, the day was good, conditions were ultimate and perfect and just fine. “This is IT” he screeched, “today is the day for . IT”! . He tugged his orange and black B.C. Highways ski- cap on tighter, adjusted his round green goggles and flew up to the nest of his friend Sputsy Red Roofus. Sputsy was a Humming Bird of great calibre. He was also inter- ested in air speed records over the Feerfull Forest-Smiling Meadow designated distance of 35 Bazzurtkins at the es- tablished height! eg ary aS a VN ta Ne ee een He was in the 2 winged feather and tail class and therefore was not in competition with Dizzy Izzy, who was in the 4 membraneous Aileron category! So there- fore naturally they were friendly, and, having a mutual interest minus competitiveness were kept busy all sum- mer long doing the designated distance enjoyably at the established height. So therefore naturally they were at times danger- ous to the rest of the community. Especially Homer Nathaniel, who had been punctured several times by either Red Roofus or Zitts. So therefore naturally you can see that a Humming Bird or a Mosquito zipping along, flat out like tiny cruise missiles, at speeds up to 4 Billion boomozonks per sec can inflict pain to the denizen who happens to cross the designated distance or rise above the established height. Feerfull Forest-Smiling Meadow designated dis- tance is FFSMDD — So 1 (FFSMDD = 4368 Kraznits. 7 Boomozonks X 22 Bazzurtkins now : the Established height is EH 2(EH= _ 127 Palloopsies 4368 Kraznits X FFSMDD 3 &. 4368 K FFSMD 7BX21PA_ Imile ave Sputsy was asleep when Dizzy reached the nest. So, Dizzy leapt upon Sputsy’s head and jumped up and down several times to waken Sputsy, who woke up im- mediately of course! “What! What! What!” shouted Sputsy. “It’s the day for IT” squealed Dizzy, ‘“‘it’s IT ” . =Infinity today! Sputsy threw back his robe of purest dandylion fluff and peered over the side of his purest Thornberry twig nest. He looked out over the quiet dreaming spark- ling green meadow. ‘ “It’s IT” he squeaked “It’s IT”. “Have you checked the Thermal layers carefully?” he asked. S “Yes! Yes! Yes! screamed Dizzy. “Weather?” asked Sputsy. “Scattered clouds at midnite” shouted the little loveable Mosquito. “Turbulence?” asked Sputsy. “Zero Turbulence” answered Dizzy, “some heavy air at 1565 gloppas!”” “Good!” said Sputsy, “Fantastic, immemorable, super swell!” 4 Meanwhile, as our two rockets were busy measur- ing FFDD, another denizen of the meadow was pushing his happy way through the glowing grass. It was Little Whiffer the amiable, jolly fun loving kindly innocent serene little skunk! Chuckling was a way of life for him, and he was beautiful! Glossy purest white, and glossy purest black he was! Little snapping beaming black eyes and large wide inquisitive twitchy whiskers he had, and a friendly friendly little grin! He was on his way ~ to visit Miz Pinky Parky Pine and her neat of 8 Parky Pinelets. Miz Pinky always had a nice hot « cup of tea for him. Underneath the Acorn tree she would set out a little table covered with a white table cloth of soft gossamer, and stacks of tawny buttery toast smeared with golden mar- malade. And they would sit and sip and munch and talk about everything all morning, every morning and there she was, glasses on her nose, pouring tea, and keeping a watch on her little ones at the same time. “Why good morning Miz Pinky” said Whiffer cheer- fully. “you surely do look just fine and respectable this lovely moming, and I swear you look younger every morning Miz Pinky, I surely do believe!” “Oh thank you Mr. Whiffer, I purely do feel just fine and I thank you for your thoughts. Would you care for a mug of hot steaming tea?” “I surely would Ma’am” replied Whiffer, “and your young ones seem just fine and snappy, with clear eyes and white teeth and beautiful little quills, they surely do!” “They had a fine father, Mr. Whiffer, they purely did.” * Miz Pinky leaned back against the Acorn Tree and cradled her cup of tea on her tummy and Whiffer sat on his haunches, elbows on the table and sipped his tea. “Yessir Miz Pinky” he said, “he was a fine Parky Pine, he surely was. May he rest in peace!. “Indeed he purely was Mr. Whiffer” replied Miz Pinky, “and have some more toast. I purely do believe Mr. Whiffer, that you don’t eat enough!” Cassiar Courier August 1980 Page 5 | “Why Miz Pinky” replied the amiable little skunk, “how Miz Pinky could I eat less than enough at such a table of tea and toast Miz Pinky, I surely do believe that less than enough would be insult to you!” “Ah Mr. Whiffer, life is such a blessing, it purely is when I think of all the blessings that Life purely is Mr. Whiffer!” “To life” chuckled Whiffer holding up his mug of tea, ‘and to the memory of your late great husband Dynamite Parky Pine, may he rest in peace Miz Parky!” “May he rest in peace” replied Miz Pinky, “may he purely do!” “Ah indeed” quoth Whiffer fervently, “he’s surely in the loving care of Pranktor by now, I surely do believe!’ ye As these two beautiful children of the leaves were thus enjoying their tea and each other, and the day and the little ones, Homer Nathaniel Sweetwater Brown approached them carefully, minding where he stepped be- cause the place was wall to wall Parky Pinelets. « “Good morning Miz Pinky, good morning Mr. Whiffer, good morning, good morning” rumbled Homer N, his long mournfull kindly face cracking into a big wide smile that ran up one side of his face and down the other. “Likewise’”’ echoed Bullseye from the hump, where he was stretched out reading the sports page. Homer N lowered himself carefully, with many a grunt and creak. “Such a morning” he said, sighing with pleasure, such a good good morning Miz Pinky.” “It purely is Homer” sighed Miz Pinky. “It surely is ” Chuckled Whiffer. “Likewise” agreed Bullseye turning to the soccer results. * So they sat theré’in that drowsy morning. In soft murmuring shadows and dancing sun they talked and drank tea, ate toast and generally enjoyed themselves be- cause nature was a good thing to them and they didn’t have to do anything if they didn’t want to! Bullseye the Garter Snake had finished the paper , and stretching out on his dainty little green and black back, was preparing himself for a quiet snooze. And, as he stared sleepily upward into the branches of the Acorn tree he saw a Mosquito perched on a branch. The Mosquito was wearing a B.C. Highways hat turned backwards, and a set of round green goggles was strapped to his little arrow shaped head. Before Bullseye could blink even one: of his own bright Garter Snake eyes, the little Mosquito leaped from the branch, screeched “adoe dominy”, and plunged at full speed straight down at Bullseye! He bottomed out just a- bove Bullseye’s head and roared across the Smiling Meadow and into the bushes pabloom! Before Bullseye could even breathe, a Humming Bird appeared. He was also clad in a B.C. Highways hat turned backwards. He was also wearing round green goggles strapped to his little arrow shaped head. He also leaped from the branch, shrieked “Rumble Bunny” and plunged straight down at Bullseye. He also bottomed out roared across the Smiling Meadow and he too crashed into the bushes pabloom! A few minutes later, the two of them came march- ing back, climbed the tree and disappeared without a word! : “Something like that can’t happen twice in one morning” thought Bullseye. So he closed his eyes and went to sleep. He was right, because it was two days before Sputsy and Dizzy could repair damages to their feathered wings and mem- braneous Ailerons, and, also, recover from bumps scratches and shock. But, it was wonderful! -” While all this was going on, another denizen of the Smiling Meadow had been watching. It was Dr. Squawkz- Rawkus, who was a scholarly, austere, ascetic Raven of enormous merit. He had been reading a 35,000 page book of the ‘Philosophy, Life and Times of Danny Dungbeetle, deceased, with 210 colored illustrations in full gloss. At page 18,075 he had been interrupted by the noise created by Sputsy and Dizzy. Dr. Squawkz-Rawkus lived on the very utmost tip of the acorn tree. His home was a huge untidy bundle of twigs, lined with bookshelves. He knew the denizens who were clustered at the base of the acorn tree very well, simply because he knew everthing very well. served everything! He also knew that his morning was absolutely and AUREL shattered because of the. air speed trials. ¢ Cont. on page 10 From his «7 vantage point, or you might say his twiggy patio, he ob- ~
