I know, I know, it’s late, and you have probably been staying up late a night, nashing your teeth and. screaming out “When will I be able to read a new issue? When, damn you, WHEN?!” Well, my friends, quite simply put we have been in Vancouver for a national con- ference for university news- papers. There we were given seminars on the ins-and-outs of the media business from luminaries such as CBC re- porters, design professionals, and Nardwuar. Hopefully in to start applying some of what we have learned and give you a higher quality publication. But right now, I will just fill up space by telling you a story that demonstrates my severe lack of street smarts. ae OE The Story of the Bisexual Coke Dealer _ One fine night after the day’s sessions were over, I went for a walk down to some of the bars with Tyler, our pro- duction coordinator. Along the way we met a fast-talking hustler with a slightly Haitian schpiel: it’s his birthday, he’s happy, where you from, oh my sister’s from Prince George, we’re friends, man! What you wanna do, I wanna party: weed, booze, coke? How about girls? No, no, no I say, | don’t need any. He takes this to mean ~ I’m dating Tyler. We laugh. He gave the whole goes “F**kit man, who cares, I like girls, I like boys, I’m bisexual.” He’s starting to get the crazy eyes. Do I want any- thing? No, no. Then he gets all sad. “Look, [ll be straight. I need $5. Can I have it?” Now I know this was stupid, but he made me laugh and we were in an open area with people around, cops further on, I’m not really worried. I give him a bit of cash. Of course, then he pulls the whole give the money to some other dude who gives him some cocaine. Then we get into the argument. He - “thinks” I gave him the money to get coke, he had to pay $25, I still owe him $20. He actually forcibly gives me the cocaine. I don’t even know what street- price is for coke, maybe I got a bargain and should have re- sold, but I don’t want to try walking the streets with coke, plus-I’m more of a Pepsi man. I give it back, he’s getting angry, reaching into his jacket, he has a knife, so on, so on. Tyler leaves, I tell our hustler friend to calm down before I back away. He reaches into his ‘coat, pulls out some money, starts lauging, HAHAHA I got you, come back, we friends, we ‘hug. I just leave, he yells “T’ll remember you, I'll get you! So now I owe my crack dealer money. 2 -Andrew Kurjata Editor OVER THE EDGE January 26, 2007 Table Of Contents 3 - News Briefs 4- Minimum Wage Upped and news from Winnipeg §5 - Organic food labels and Muslims vandalized -Th e power outage 7 -UNBC news 8/9 - Columns and opinions 10 - Rob Budde Feature 11 - Poetic music Feature 12/ 13 - Reviews 14/15 - Fun and Games.
