UNITED STEELWORKERS OF AMERICA LOCAL 6536 We, the Executive have been busy as usual with Beefs and Gripes. At the present time we have three Greivances, one from the kitchen, one from the Sheetmetal and the other from the Tramline Dept. It will be a few days before we can process them all, but possibly by the General Meeting we will have a full report from the Greivance Com- mittee. The General Meeting is on Nov. 8th., at which time Mr. Harvey Kent will be our guest and will show a film following the meeting, which we hope will be of interest to all. The C.W.S. Committee is busy and have nearly completed the Kit- chen Staff Job Classifications. We are in further discussions of the Hough 100 Series Operator's Class- ification. Studies will be made of Air pollution in Cassiar and possibly by the time this publication is printed, they will have been com- pleted. The results will be made available to you as soon as possible. Mr. Wm. Akey, Vice President and myself, have just attended an Educational School sponsored by the United Steelworkers of America in Whitehorse, to further our union education. We feel it was very en- lightening and will help to cope with our daily problems and any of your future questions that may arise within the Union. This was the biggest expenditure of the year, but may prove more profitable in the end. The expenses and cost will be read at the General Meeting by the Financial Secretary. You probably have noticed the new boxes around town marked Union. These will be used for Union papers, publications and news letters of interest to all. Check one to-day, there may be something to your in- terest. We are trying to organize a 11 "Fact Finding Committee" in prepar- ation for the new contract. We hope to gather information well in advan- ce of contract time. You may think this is early, but preparations can. be long and tedious. The sooner we are prepared the better. Bring your views and suggestions to the meeting Have you heard the radio annou- , cement of our general meetings? i These will continue, however, I am sure I need not remind you that General Meetings are held, EVERY SECOND MONDAY of the month at the Community Centre at 7:30 p.m. sharp. With the exception of when there is a holiday on that Monday. Are you aware of WHAT the Exec- utive has done with $8,000.00??? If not, you can find out at the next meeting. Once again, may I remind you of the Western District Union Death Benefit Plan. Have you signed up? Think of your loved ones, it may not be of concern today but what of tomorrow? Benefits derived far ex- ceed the initial cost. Your Executive strives for the best and nothing less, and I repeat we need your interest and support. President -H. Hawkins Vice-President -Wm.
