As far as we can see, this would not prove of enough value to justify the distri- bution and installation of a large amount of expensive equipment to make this possible. On the other hand, facsimile apparatus can transmit pictures over any radio transmitter and there is no more limit to distance than there is to any good radio transmission.” FREAK DEATHS TAKE TOLL IN 1937 THERE WERE 326 fatalities reported to the Provincial Police in 1937. Of this num- ber, 94 were drowned, 64 killed in logging accidents, 29 in mines and 33 in automobile wrecks. Of the automobile fatalities, refer- ence is only made to those reported to the B. C. Police and the figure does not include fatal car accidents in Vancouver and other organized cities. The remaining fatal accidents under the heading of miscellaneous causes unfold some strange stories of how suddenly and unex- pectedly death can strike. Looking through the records we come across the case of a man who drank gasoline in mistake for water and another who drank poison instead of liquor, while a third ate poisonous fungus in mistake for mushrooms. Falls caused many deaths, including falls from a bicycle, a load of hay, a cliff, a ladder, a wagon, a steel column; falls down stairs, down a hatchway and into a pit. Three persons were buried alive and killed instantly, one in a snowslide, one in a fall of rock and an- other in a gravel slide. Twenty-eight per- sons were struck by trains. One man lost his life when struck by a load slung out from a ship; a portion of broken wood pulley block accounted for another, and a third was instantly killed by a blow from a sawmill flywheel. Explosives caused several fatal accidents, the most tragic being the case of a high school boy experimenting with chemicals. There was the usual quota of accidentally discharged rifles, shotguns and pistols. Animals were responsible for three lives. A horse killed a child, a mad bull gored a man, a third man died of injuries received when dragged by the tethering rope attached to a frightened cow. Fire ac- counted for two deaths and the unexpected collapse of a building killed two more. Rec- reation and sport took their toll. One youth was killed when he dived into shallow water and another while ski-ing struck a stump, causing fatal brain injury. The record of tragedies involved all ages and sexes, from a child who was smothered in a crib and four little Indian boys who froze to death, to the elderly lady who fell from her bicycle.
