The next morning we tried aqain and this time were successful. We left a message with them to contact Gleasons and tell them we would arrive in Atlin on Auqust 2nd, which would make us a few days late, The next morning Bill was up briaht and early and it was a beautiful day, clear and sunny. He put the coffee on then went outside and took pictures of the lake with the mist rising and watch- ed two moose arazing on the other side of the lake. When breakfast was ready he rousted the rest of us out. \e were beainning to run low on a few thinas such as flour, sugar, (things we had stached at Hartz Creek) and pancake mix’ so we borrowed some from Barry's supplies and carried on. That day we spent 11 miserable hours on the trail. We were either aoina through bogs or the trail was like a junale. The boqs were so had in some places that the horses would sink almost to their bellies and once Chestnut aot boaaed down so badly we had to unpack her to get her out. ee Mike, Commanche and Paleface crossing Kautton River just before we came to the boas and junqle! One aood lIauagh we had that day was at Tony. He had bought a new pair of chaps for the trip and had even put our brand (ZK) on each lea. Up to this time he hadn't worn them but our leas were qettina quite scratched from the brush so out they came, They were a little too lona for him so Mike measured them on Tony and proceeded to cut the leas to fit. That afternoon we were qoina through a real boa and Tony's horse the h started to bog down so Tony bailed off. The rest of us had already qone throuah and were waitina for him. \lhen he bailed off he looked just like bat man. Mike started to laugh and called to him, ‘Nhat happened Unc, your horse run out of aas?' Poor Tony, he was covered in mud and couldn't see much humor in it at all. He only wore his chaps once after that. About 4 in the afternoon we came to a creek but thouaht it was too early to stop as according to the map there was another qood camp spot not too far away. However, we rode until 10 that niaht and never did come to another creek or a decent place to camp. It was beainning to aet dark so knew we had to stop soon. le finally came to a spot where there was a bit of water so we camped right on the trail, using a rope to hanq our tents ‘on. \le tied up all the horses that night and qave them a feed of oats as the grazing was very poor. | was so tired that as soon as the tents were up | crawled in, The rest stayed up and were qoing to make supper but were too tired so ended up sharing a can of tomatoes and joining me. The next mornina we had a good lauqh at our makeshift camp and thinas looked a little briahter. That day we were determined to make Nahlin and knew it couldn*™t be too far. \le qot up at 9 am and just took it easy. Left camp at 1 pm. The trail was much better and soon we began winding down to the Nahlin River. \Vle arrived at Nahlin at 3 pm. There was a qood camping spot for us and qood arazing for and made camn.- rate Sak eee Telearanh Station Ww
