A Memorable Mushroom Expedition

The Biology Club’s much anticipated Mush-
room Expedition, led by Dr. Keith Egger,
took off Saturday, September the 26. More
than thirty students attended this event to
learn about, and possibly eat the different
kinds of mushrooms that surround the cam-
pus of UNBC. Dr. Egger pointed out that the

mushroom season was coming to an end,
but still, there would be plenty for us to see
along the Greenway Trail.

Just outside of campus we spotted a cluster
of Shaggy Mane (Coprinus comatus). For
those that express an interest in the consump-
tion of mushrooms, this is the one for you.
Delicious, and easy to prepare, they grow in
abundance around campus. Just make sure
you eat them before they turn black.

The most striking, and scrumptiously edible
mushroom to be discovered was the Bear’s
Head mushroom (genus Hericium). Its fruit-
ing bodies usually hang off from rotting
logs, and its taste was described to me as

“sweet, yet meaty”.

Dr. Egger taught the group tips and tricks
in identifying mushrooms, its ecological
importance, and symbiotic relationships
mushrooms have with other plants and
animals. Of the many mushrooms that we
found, many were unidentifyable, even by
Dr. Egger. This shows us just how little we
know of the kindom Fungi as a whole. Over-
all, everyone had a marvelous time learning
about mushrooms. Thank you, Dr. Egger, for
teaching us!

The next event that the Biology Club will
partake in will be a Pursue for Amphibians
with Mark Thompson, who specializes in

salamanders. This event is scheduled for Fri-
day, October the in the evening 2™ between
8pm to 1lpm. The meeting place still re-
mains a mystery. If you’re interested in par-
taking on this quest, please send an email to
bioclubunbc@ gmail.com. Other events we
will be holding throughout the school year
include show-shoeing, exploring butterflies,
working with beehives, and many more.
