STEWART

Situated at the head of the Portland Canal some 123 nautical miles
north of Prince Rupert, has an actual town population of about 700
people, and is the centre for the rapidly developing mining industry on the
Canadian side of the line covering a wide area. Owing to the proximity
of the Alaskan boundary there are two Customs Officers. The Mining
Recorder’s Office shows a greater volume of active mining business than
any other in the Province. There is a Stipendary Magistrate, Provincial
Police, Superior School, affording both High and ordinary school educa-
tion, two churches, a weekly newspaper, Bank of Montreal, Government
Telegraph Office, electric light, picture theatre, hospital, four general, two
hardware, one clothing and one ladies’ and children’s wear store, two
hotels, three rooming houses, one butcher shop, one dairy, one drug store,
three restaurants, shoe maker, dentist, doctor, four transfer businesses, a
Government Liquor Store, an express office, two notary publics, a charter-
ed Citizens’ Association, a Board of Trade, a Service Men’s Club, the
Moose Lodge.

Stewart is rapidly assuming an important place among the coasting
ports, there being three coast-wise steamship companies running regular
boats touching there. Some twenty-three or four boats enter and clear
from the port of Stewart each month.
