With all the publicity about~the energy crisis and saving of gasoline by driving at a rate of 50 miles per hour, not much has been said about the safety that result sults from reduced speed. The Hercules Research Center has recently published some sobering statistics on ve- hicle accidents that we should all heed. Speed Range Chances of Death 0 - 10 a I Sra 11 - 20 1 in 963 21 - 30 1 in 316 31 - 40 1 in 97 41 - 50 1 in 88 51 - 60 1 in’ 31 61 - 70 iin ¥ 71 - 80 = Oi 5 80 - up 1 inl Opposite each speed range is the chance of. death if the car is involved in an accident. Any heavy-footed driver who understands a little about statistics will realize the odds of survival drop dramatically as higher speeds are approached. The Nat- ional Safety Council's statistics, the states statistics and other statistics bear out the same deadly facts. Because "speed kills," curtail it when driving. “Would one ear-piercing scream of disgust scare : away the fish?”
