VERNON NEWS December 12th, 1940. “THESE MEN are in every way deserv- ing such approbation,’ said His Honour, Judge J. Ross Archibald, when present- ing the Provincial Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal to seven mem- hers of the force at an impressive cere- mony in the County Court Chambers in Vernon. : “The province is fortunate in having a police force of such calibre.” The award is the first of its kind estab- lished by the government for provincial employees and was made for the first time since provided for in recent Provincial Police regulations. It requires that the recipient has served for 20 years, the last ten of which have been without reprimand or censure. Those honoured were: Inspector C. R. Mackenzie, Victoria, an instructor in police training schools, who is presently relieving Inspector E. Gam- mon, Kamloops; Staff-Sergt. W. J. Thomson, D.S.M., formerly of Vernon, now in charge of the Kelowna District; Sergt. R. S. Nelson, M.C., Vernon; Const. C. J. Waddell, in charge of the Chase Detachment; Const. C. J. Gurr, Highway Patrol, Vernon District ; Const. J. A. Quesnel, for 22 years in charge of the Lumby Detachment, and ex-Const. Richard Mckinley, in charge of the En- derby Detachment until his recent super- annuation. “Words of mine would be superfluous about your service in Vernon, which people here know so well,” said Judge Archibald, while pinning the Long Ser- vice and Good Conduct Medal on the uniform of Sgt. Nelson. Sgt. Nelson has been stationed in Vernon for nine and a half years, the first three in charge of the city detachment and the remainder of the time in command of the Vernon Dis- trict. To Const. Gurr, Judge Archibald re- marked, “You have served the province very acceptably in your position with the Highway Patrol.” “Const. Quesnel is known to the people in the Lumby District as a very faithful worker i that community,” commented Judge Archibald. Speaking to Staff-Sergt. Thomson, he referred to the pending transfer of this officer to Nelson. When Const. Waddell received his medal, Judge Archibald inti- mated that the constable would soon re- ceive promotion to the rank of Corp. “Although you have been known to me only a short time,” he addressed Inspector Mackenzie,” it has been a very happy association. It is a very happy moment for me to give you this medal.” ; Ex-Const. McKinley was unavoidably absent owing to illness and Judge Archi- bald presented a medal to Sgt. Nelson with the request that it be suitably con- veyed to Mr. McKinley.
