Twice told tales are well remembered,
Oft-seen pictures best recalled;
Thus an evil reputation
Round this lonely hostel walled,
Till the traveller on his journey
Hurried on a detour wide,
With the hope that safer refuge
Might present ere eventide.

Sat he down, this grey-haired stranger,
Slowly he surveyed the place,
Made some mental calculation,
Scanned the landlord’s wizened face,
From his pocket brought a canvas
Filled with dust and chunks of gold,
Cut the string and spread his treasure,
With a gesture well controlled.

And the landlord of this rest-house,
Passed his years in discontent,

Brooding o’er his loss, and longing

For a city’s merriment;

When one day there chanced a stranger,
Seeking shelter for the night.

“That for this and all that’s in it,”
Said the stranger. “Yea or nay?

“Tf my gold looks good then take it,
“Sign this up and haste away.”

Wide of eyes, the avaricious
Landlord gasped and grabbed his find,

To the Inn, with change of owner,
Soon a change of fortune came. .
As to south and east spread, fanlike, —
News of gold of Klondike fame.
Thousands climbed the ice-bound mo
tains;
Thousands packed the snow-blocked tr:
Thousands died upon the wayside: |

Ere they'd started, doomed to fail.

Pledging soul and risking body,
O’er the marrow-chilling wold,

Still they came and still they clamoured,
Staking gold in lust for gold.

At the hostel in the Northland,

Vicious men for service fought.

Keen was he of eye and visage,

Signed the Bill of Sale and scurried
Panther-like for agile might.

Food cost more than golden, nuggets:
Lest his guest might change his mind.

Drink a kingly ransom brought.
