COQUALEETZA RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL Coqualeetza Scouts The First Coqualeetza Troop continues to flourish, number of Scouts on the roll now being forty-five. Some eighteen or twenty boys came up from the ranks of the Pack. More attention has been paid to winning “Scout Spirit” that to winning Scout Badges and it has also been our endeavor to keep the “out” in Scouting. The Patrol competition has been a success. Several of the Troop meetings have been held outside, and tracking has been taken up in a small way. On Easter Monday the P.L.’s and the Seconds hiked up Chilliwack Mountain and over to the Fraser River. They have also had special instruction in Scout work. A “Scouts Own” was held in recognition of B.P.’s birthday, and we also attended St. Thomas’ Church with the Chilliwack Troop. On Sunday. February 26th. a Scout and Guide service was conducted by Scout Leader Capt. Pirie and Assistant Scout Leader Mr. Munro. Choir composed of Scouts and Guides. Guide Captain Miss Milsom read the lesson. Mr. Munro delivered an address based on the 3rd Epistle of St. John, verse 5. with special reference to the ten Scout laws, stressing loyalty. The Guides and Scouts repeated the promise. The Union Jack was in its stand. A joint service of Guides and Scouts was held in the Assembly Hall at which members from other Guide and Scout Troops were present on Sunday, May the 28th. Provincial President. Mr. W. Lord. of the Boy Scouts was present and also Provincial Acting Commissioner Mr. Solway, who gave an inspirational address. Coqualeetza Cadets CAPT. P: F. PIRIE On April 27th, Capt. E. M. MacBrayne, D.G.O., M.C., inspected the Coqualeetza Cadet Corps accompanied by S. M. MacBain. The Cadets were put through the ceremonial drill which was followed by. physical drill and games. Sergeant Adams then took charge of the platoon drill which was ably done. The section commanders: Cpl. H. Sepass, No. | Section; Cpl. V. Wells, No. 2 Section; Cpl. P. Watson, No. 3 Section; Cpl. P. Good, No. 4 Section, took command of their sections and gave a good demonstration of squad drill. extended order, signalling, scouting and patrols. and first aid. Captain MacBrayne addressed the Corps at the close of the inspection and commended them for their good showing. He finished by saying that it compared favorably with any Cadet Corps in British Columbia. Cadet Shield The presentation of the Cadet Shield took place the evening of the 18th of November. -Coqualeetza Cadets, for the third year running, were awarded the Shield of the |.O.D.E. Provincial Chapter. The wish of the donors and also of the Inspector, Capt. MacBrayne, is that the presen- tation shall be an occasion. To this intent Mrs. R. J. Sprott, Provincial Organizing Secretary was invited to come from Vancouver and make it on behalf of the Chapter. The affair was sponsored by the Chilliwack Municipal Chapter, and quite a gathering of members assembled in Coqualeetza Assembly Hall. Mrs. Sprott made a delightful congratulatory and encouraging speech. Sergeant Oliver Adams accepted the Shield and Capt. Pirie replied. The Shield then automatically became the property of the Coqualeetza Cadets. Girl Guides The Girl Guides have had a busy and enthusiastic year. Under the supervision of Mrs. MacKenzie the Guides have studied Domestic Hygiene, Food Values and Preparing Menus. which should prove useful in domestic life. Miss Newington instructed the girls in knitting and supervised the work one evening a week. Such useful things as tams, scarves, coat-hanger covers and sockees were made. Some of the activities during the year were a Jig-saw Puzzle party, a combined Guide and Scout social rally and Church parade at St. Thomas’ Chilliwack. Fourteen
