FIRE LEVELS OLD HOME Fire completely destroyed the Christie house at Good Hope Lake on Wednesday, May 25, 1977. The fire was reported at 12: 35 p.m. to the Ministry of High- ways, who responded to the alarm The fire fighting crews arrived on the scene six minutes after the alarm was received but, the fire was already out of control and the building completely a blaze. The fire crews managed to Save a bus parked beside the house and also kept the fire from spreading to nearby buil- dings and the bush. Good Hope Lake Camp Superi- ntendent, Stan Isberg reported that due to heavy rains in the past few days, helped eliminate the possibility of a forest fire breaking out. There were no injuries and some of the tenants managed to Save some of their personal belongings. The fire started from an over-heated chimney. It was not known if the building was covered by insurance. Federal input of $888,614 will be allo- cated for the newly approved proj- ects, bringing to $1,887,000 the total federal contribution to Skeena this spring. Projects which received funding were among those submitted for the February Canada Works deadline but which could not receive funding because of budget restrictions. Canada Works is part of the federal government's job crea- tion strategy, and is designed to create employment through com- munity-oriented projects. Earlier this week, Mrs. Camp- agnolo announced that 14 other Canada Works projects had recei- ved augmented funding. YOUNG CANADA WORKS PROJECTS OTTAWA -- Iona Campagnolo, MP for Skeena, has announced that federal Young Canada projects in Skeena will create close to 400 jobs for students this summer. Seventy-two projects have been . approved for high school and university. students, Mrs. Cam- pagnolo said. Federal allo- cation will be $569,000. Commenting on the announce- ment, Mrs. Campagnolo said the Department of Manpower and Immigration's job creation stra- tegy will allow some very im- portant community improvements in Skeena, such as parks and re- creation surveys, playground, cross-country trail and tobo- ggan slope development, assis- . tance for the handicapped and several area beautification pro- jests. The MP said Young Canada Works will probably be the major student employer in the area this summer - following the recent release of national statistics indicating that students will be hardest hit by. un3employment in the next few months. ~ In keeping with Canada Works 17 BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SEMINAR AT WATSON LAKE A Business Management Seminar on one of the key problem areas faced by small businesses was held in Watson Lake at the Belvedere Motor Hotel on Wednesday, May 4th, 1977. The day's program dealt with: CASH FLOW AND INCORPORATION This , one day seminar was attended by 14 participants. This seminar was arranged by the Management Services Division of the Federal Business Development Bank, in co-operation with the ‘ Yukon Visitors Association, and was one of the several . hundred being conducted by the Bank in smaller cities and towns across Canada. The Bank's Management Services scr _ has three main spheres of activities: Management Training, Management Counselling and an Information Service. The Information Service provides details of approximately 100 Federal Government assistance programs to business. There is also a pamphlet series entitled 'Mindtng your Own Business'' which now contains 14 pamphlets on various subjects. The Small Business News is issued quarterly. The Management Counselling provided by the Bank is done mainly by retired executives and concentrates on solving the problems of small business which cannot afford to employ — experts on a full-time basis. This service is provided at a nominal daily rate.
