The children were The LOSI. Now most dogs are trained well enough to stay around thetr own yard and out of trouble. This type 06 dog does net draw the numerous complaints from it's neighbors. The dogs that usually cause problems are generally the Lange ones that are sdmplky turned Loose to Live off the fat of the Land. . It's important to remember 4t isn't the dog's fault that he 4s a problem. Uncared for, he really has no chorce but to do what he does. So far our attempts to solve this eprobLem have not proved success ful for any Length of time. Maybe the faulr Lies in the fact that this probLem does noa bekong onkyu to a few of us. Ir 48 your problem too because tne offenders betong 20 you. what are you doing to take cane of your dog in order to pre- vent 4t from pecomeng a menace in yowr communcty? Conserving Canada's Wildlife Modern man, doubling his popu- lation every fifty or sixty years and carrying his technology into all parts of the earth, is a menace to wildlife everywhere. The expansion of cities, the ever- increasing demand for electric power dams, the use of poisonous chemicals in agriculture and industry, the harvesting of forests, and the in- creased leisure time that sends millions of people into wildlife territory seeking to enjoy nature: all these impose heavy pressure on wild animals. Man's family album, if carried back just a few thousand years, would show him pictures of himself re- sembling the photographs we take of creatures we now call 'wild". For ninety-nine per cent of his time on earth man was a food gatherer like FREEDOM IN CANADA Some lovers of freedom were puzzled and an- noyed when Canada abstained from approving the Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the Social Committee of the United Nations. The explanation was simple. It is the very ex- tent of our liberties that makes it impracticable for the Canadian Government to subscribe to the charter of rights. Both provincial and federal governments approve the freedoms, but protec- tion and development of them must be carried on within the framework of our constitution, which assigns to each government its duties. Neither a province nor the federated provinces may infringe the rights of the other. It seems worthwhile to quote a paragraph from an article by Hugh MacLennan, author of Baro- meter Rising, Two Solitudes, and The Precipice. — This article, which appeared in Foreign Affairs of April 1949, should be read by every Canadian from school pupil to elder statesman. Mr. Mac Lennan said: “This country, which once was Britain’s senior Dominion and now stands on her own, has ac- quired a purely feminine capacity for sustaining within her nature contradictions so difficult to reconcile that most societies possessing them would be torn by periodic revolutions. Canada has acquired the good woman's hatred of quar- rels, the good woman’s readiness to make endless compromises for the sake of peace within the home, the good woman’s knowledge that al- though her husband can knock her down if he chooses, she will be able to make him ashamed of himself if such an idea begins to form in his mind. Canada also possesses the hard rock which is in the core of every good woman’s soul; any threat to her basic values calls up a reluctant but im- placable resistance."’ Mr. MacLennan goes on to describe how, after the fall of Quebec, the British Government passed the famous Quebec Act, which he calls ‘‘the most liberal political document enacted by a conqueror up to that time’’. It guaranteed the French-Cana- dians freedom of religion, the right to preserve their own language in the courts and, to teach it in the schools, as well as the right to continue the use and practice of the French civil law. Respect for and observance of rights and free- doms depends to a large extent upon the convic- tions, character and spirit of the people. Even the most liberal-seeming bill of rights may become twisted in the minds and hands of an illiberal and inept generation. It is a tribute to the love of the ' Canadian people for freedom, and to their toler- ance and fairness, that life has gone its tranquil’ way in this country, with progress and rising stan- _ dards of living marching hand in hand with the ' utmost personal liberty. Destruction of life is irrevers- -a few weeks or months and if they are ible. The machines that men make are invented, contrived and built in destroyed they can be replaced. Wild animals were millions of years in the making. The forces that shaped the earth moulded their form. They were sorted and discarded, modified and improved, until they reached the stage of adaptation that makes them fit for the age of the world in which they: live. Canada is in a special relation- ship with nature. She is known throughout the world for the wealth and variety of her wildlife. She has an estimated 100,000 different kinds of animals living in a state of nature. These include 193 Species of mammals, 518 species of birds, 82 species of amphibians LIONS CLUB NEWS The Cassiar Lions Club Fourth Annual Oktoberfest will be held October 14th & 15th. The Eldweiss ‘Band of Seattle will be flying in from Hawaii for their fourth visit to Cassiar. As some other annual events seem to be cancelled this year, the Oktoberfest should be able to sell itself. For the first time, everyone will have a choice of two nights to participate. To have a one night Oktoberfest, we would have to build a-hall twice the size of the present building. A possible project? The Oktober- fest has been the biggest event of the year in Cassiar, lets keep that reputation. The 1977 CNIB Drive will be held on September 22nd. through October Ist. This year the goal has been set at $3500.00. Lion Bill Leclair will chair the Drive this year, looking to be the biggest Drive ever. Payroll deduction plans will be available this year, for the - third year in a row. Lion George Gibbs District Supervisor for the CNIB will be in Cassiar on Thursday.
