PTARMIG AN PLAYERS

The Ptarmigan Players are looking forward to their
production of “Christmas in a Box”. Rehearsals are
going well each Saturday. The sets are built and will be
put up at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7th. Parents
are reminded that their children who are involved in the
produetion will be in rehearsal the week of December 7th
through to Saturday, December 13th.

CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
PREVENTION WORKSHOP

School District No. 87 conducted a Child Sexual
Abuse Prevention Workshop in Dease Lake on November
27th and 28th. Participants included educators from
schools in the District’s five communities, representatives
from the School Board, as well as members from each
Parents Advisory Committee.

The two day program addressed the problem of child
sexual abuse and focused on the C.A.R.E. education pro-

“gram. Child Abuse Research & Education (C.A.R.E.)
Production Association is a non-profit organization ded-

icated to the prevention of child sexual abuse. Working
with corporate, foundation and public donations as well
as government grants, C.A.R.E. Productions has concen-
trated its efforts on gathering and distributing information
about the prevention of child sexual abuse.

C.A.R.E. Productions’ major production to date is an
educational kit for use by a trained leader in schools,
church and parent groups. The kit is suitable for use with
five to nine year old youngsters. It has been endorsed by
teachers and parents in many communities. C.A.R.E. is
presently being used in schools and organizations in
countries around the world.

Miss Henderson was the facilitator at the Child Abuse
Workshop in Dease Lake. The agenda included the
following:

The Problem: Definition, dynamics, and the role of the
teacher in prevention and helping the abused child.

Prevention: | Resource materials and programs. The
C.A.R.E. Kit - including background, development
and objectives. How to use the kit: Recommend-
ations were given from the Dease Lake pilot project
for implementing and carrying out the, program.

Intervention and Treatment: Behavioural indicators; the
teacher’s role including legal obligation, handling
disclosures and reporting, after disclosure and the role
of the child protection agency (MHR) and the law
enforcement agency (RCMP).

Dease Lake School piloted the C.A.R.E. program
during the 1985-86 school year. Miss Sue Henderson of
Dease Lake School has been trained as an instructor and
was responsible for implementing the child abuse prevent:
ion program at the Kindergarten level.

WHOLE LANGUAGE
- WHAT IS IT?

The whole language approach is a method of teaching
all subject areas in school. It is eclectic - using some new
ideas as well as tried and true techniques that good teach-
ers have always used. Whole language looks at reading and
writing from a top-down approach. Children understand
the overall picture (concept) before looking at the smaller,
more isolated details. This approach is based on good
quality children’s literature rather than on controlled voc-
abulary. (Remember “Fun With Dick and Jane’’?) The
skills needed to become effective communicators are not
neglected or left to chance. However, they are taught in
a more meaningful and natural manner. Therefore, skills
are not taught in isolation.

The whole language approach is based on research
done in the field of language development, on theories of
reading instruction and on discoveries in the area of brain
function and learning.

Above all, the whole language approach is child cent-
ered. Every theory and technique is designed to capitalize
on what we know about children; how they learn, what
they enjoy, where their strengths and weaknesses lie and
to provide them with opportunities to be successful.
These successes enable children to cope with the struggles
involved in learning.

Cognitive psychologists believe that a child should
and could learn to read and write with the same ease as
they learn to speak and to understand the spoken word.
Cognitive psychologists also believe that everything we
learn depends upon something we have already learned.
Therefore, there are certain implications a whole language
approach capitalizes on:

First, teaching must be experiencially based.

Second, we must provide many experiences for child-
ren which give them the opportunity to share their
experiences both orally and graphically. A thematic ap-
proach is most successful.

Third, the material the child reads must represent
familiar concepts. There’ should be many books available
in the classroom on the theme being studied. In a whole
language classroom, the teacher may first read the mater-
ial to the children so that they will have an oral under-
standing of the concept.

Since learning is based on the child’s experiences, you
as parents can help your child become a successful learner.
