Vince Gibson,

A general meeting was held in mid-September,
when the new executive were elected: Vince Gibson,
President; Dave Tripp, Vice-President; Bryan Lundale,
returning as Secretary-Treasurer for the third term.

This year’s executive would like to take this op-
portunity to thank last year’s-executive - Eck Trask, John
Drzimotta and Bryan Lundale - for a job well done, and
the smooth transition to this year’s executive.

Some New Business discussed was to play two 25-
minute stop-time periods, instead of two 20-minute
straight, and one 20-minute stop time.

Touch Icing was another rule injected into the
league.

This year’s make-up of teams was done by means
of a blind draft. Thanks to all who participated. All three
teams seem fairly even.

After six weeks of play, the consensus among the
players is that they like the rule changes and feel the
teams are more competitive, although the standings may
not reflect this.

One other major change to the rules this year is
the adopting of a “Century Club”. This basically means
that anyone who accumulates 100 minutes in penalties
will be suspended for the remainder of the year.

One of the league’s weaknesses in the past, which
continues to be a problem, is Referees. The calibre has
been improving through the years, and should get better
with the help of Mike Landucci, a Level IV Referee. Un-
fortunately only four people attended a clinic Mike put

on.

Another area which could do with a lot of im-
provement from all teams, in this writer’s opinion, would
be a decline in the complaining which seems to take place
on the ice whenever a call goes the “wrong” way. Let’s
clean up our acts and HAVE FUN!

The Ralf Voss Centre has two job openings commen-
cing January 16, 1989.

ARTS AND CULTURAL CO-ORDINATOR:

The primary function of this job is the co-ordination

and promotion of arts and cultural programs presented

at the Ralf Voss Centre in Cassiar.

Hours: 40 hours/week (split afternoons and nights)

Wage: $7.39/hour with an accomodation allowance
extra (salary to be reviewed at a later date)

MAINTENANCE/JANITOR:

The employee will work under close supervision with
the maintenance man already employed with the Cass-
iar Community Club. The employee must have basic
skills in carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, pro-
pane equipment and janitorial skills.
Hours: 40 hours/week for 20 weeks (this may change
to extend length of employment, and employee
will work less hours/week) i

DID YOU KNOW THAT:
The Cassiar Hospital Board is comprised of nine
elected trustees, and one appointed by the government.
YOU can have input into the election of trustees
by becoming a member of the Cassiar Hospital Society for
only $1.00 a year.

The elections are held at the Annual General Meet-
ing which is held in March of each year.

‘The primary responsibility and top priority for the
Board is to ensure the HIGHEST POSSIBLE STANDARD
OF CARE AND SERVICE within the limits imposed by
the human, material, and financial resources available.

The Board oversees a budget of nearly half a
million dollars annually - a budget that comes directly
from a grant from the Ministry of Health and indirectly
from your tax dollars.

That the Cassiar Hospital Board-is’currently inves-
tigating the possibility of hiring its own physician.

The Hospital is a separate entity from the Doctor’s
Clinic, even though they are both housed in the same
building - and the Board of Trustees is responsible for the
former but not the latter.

The Cassiar Hospital Board was instrumental in
acquiring the services of an itinerent Mental Health
Worker for Cassiar.

The Cassiar Hospital Board has adopted as one of
its goals the improvement of communication between it-
self and the public.

If you have a complaint, concern, or question
about the quality of care you receive in the hospital, you
can have it forwarded to the Board by phoning or writing
Kathy Dycher, the Hospital Administrator.

It’s Flu Season!

Influenza is a virus, transferred person-to-person
by the respiratory route, most likely via moisture drop-
lets. The incubation period is usually quite short (24-
72 Hours) so transmission can be fast.

Flu epidemics usually occur in the winter. Cool,
dry air favours survival of the virus and people tend
to congregate indoors in the winter, aiding transmission.
Outbreaks often follow the start of the school year
when students get back together.

Typical symptoms of the flu are tiredness and
achiness, sudden onset of fever, a dry cough and some-
times a sore throat. Other symptoms may include head-
ache, chills and red, watery eyes. Most people get over
the flu in a week or two, but in some people, influenza
can lead to pneumonia and result in hospitalization or
even death.

Up to 90% of deaths occur in people aged 65
or older who are particularly vulnerable to secondary
pneumonia because immune systems weaken with age.
As well, older people are more likely to have an under-
lying medical condition which can aggravate the risk
of severe or fatal flu complications.

While a nutritious, balanced diet, plenty of rest

and regular moderate exercise help maintain good
health and keep up resistance to a flu virus, flu vaccine
is the single most effective way of preventing or lessen-
ing the effects of influenza.
