Over The Edge Page 14 Sports And Clubs September 21, 1999 UNBC Medieval Club Goes To War: Clinton 99 by Nicole Tonn The long weekend in August was an exciting one for members of the UNBC Medieval Culture and Combat Club. Fourteen of us travelled to Clinton B.C. Clinton is the home of one of the largest medieval recre- ations in North America. For many this may seem to be an odd way of spending a long weekend, but for those who were there it was blissful, and | am sure that | speak for every- one when | say there was no place that we would rather have been. The majority of us arrived friday night, and by the time we did arrive the festivites were in full swing. Torches lit the road as we searched for our campsite. Hundreds of hooded figures milled about sipping at their mugs of ale. Soft music added to the soothing environment. The focus of the event, the war, started _Saturday afternoon. Of the three thousand peo- ple in attendance, four hundred of them were preparing to dress in armour and reenact the battles of the dark ages. The Wolfpack (as we tenderly call ourselves) Warriors were among the first to be ready for battle. Holes in armour had been repaired (the Wolfpack motto is safety first), weapons had been retouched, and video cam- eras stood by; the smell of glory was in the air. A And what a Gat glorious day it = was indeed! The Wolfpack stood ready for the command, easi- ly identifiable with red and black and matching tabards. When the command was given, the field became a moving sea of metal. All that could be heard were the screams of the dying and the clash _ of Wolfpack pr weapons. Those of us off the field watched as the Wolfpack moved steadily and confidently along the field, picking off opponents as they went. After about half an hour, the field was a sea of bodies; some injured, most dead. Sunday’s events were x much teh same as Saturday, except that this time the scenario was the Baronesses walk. This is how it worked: The Baroness is escorted through the field by knights in armour (well, everyone is in armour...) and the opposing side must try to kidnap her. Obviously her knights and their lackies serve to protect her from the opposing forces, but this is not. always possible. Our Wolfpack members were on the opposing 3 side that did manage to kidnap the Baroness, but most had been slaughtered in the process. These things happen... After the battle, everyone waits for night UNBC Soccer Set To Roll by Jeremy Fung After only two years of playing as a club under NUGSS, the UNBC soccer team has set is sights on compet- ing at the varsity level. The soccer team has recently received Junior Varsity status, this is the first step to in the process of becoming a Varsity team. Through the JV program the team will be eligible for part of the money raised through the student ath- letic fee. They also receive more non-cash resources that will help the team become more successful. "We are really happy at how quickly things are moving for us," said Shawn McNaughton, the new manager of the soccer team. "The amount of support we are receiving from the community, as well as from the university, is quite overwhelming. Local teams are calling us to book exhibitions, and the local soccer associations have been more helpful in giving us fields to practice on, as well as in helping us find a coach." At the Junior Varsity level, the soccer team is expected to expand from playing just indoor soccer at the local level, to playing outdoor soc- cer against other col- leges and universities. These could take place during a Thanksgiving weekend road __ trip. "Everything is very much tentative right now, but we are trying very hard to make this road trip a reality. First we need to see if there is enough money avail- able for such an event, and if not we need to find ways of raising the funds. After that, we need to find a couple of teams to play. If we can't do either one, then we have to look, at other options." The other options include a high- school indoor soccer tournament and an All- Star tournament at the local level. Another idea is to create a soccer training camp in the spring for youth soccer teams. As for team selection, tryouts began on September 13. There was an excellent turn out at the Youth Fields located at the bottom of the University Hill. Players from across Canada came out to enjoy the fine weather and to kick a ball around. Daren Sears is the new coach for the Men's Soccer team. He has played for the SFU— team, and he has been appointed chairman for the Northern Caribog Senior Soccer Association. His experi- ence will allow UNBC's soccer players to con- tinue their development, and provide them the discipline necessary to succeed. Over all, it looks like a great season for soccer fans, and we wish the team well. a a em Eas fa jaitpoe nae epares to put the hurt on their enemies. shields Photo by Jeanette Lapre ; to fall, at which point we get payed. Payed you ask? Well the Wolfpack is a mercenary group that hires itself out to the highest bidder. The standard pay is all the ale, mead, or wine that we can drink. So the surroundings are set, the night falls, and the ambi- ence that comes is diffi- cult to describe to those who haven't expe- Bee rienced it. Everyone is = greeted with = “My Lord” or — “My Lady’, = and they are all dressed in garb = (cos- tumes) that is befitting to his or her character persona. Chivalry is most certain- ly alive in this place, and each person is uncondi- tionally acceptable. Then the drinking begins... Now, when the Wolfpack drinks, there is mass confusion. The men are fighting over spilled beer and arm wrestling one another at every opportunity, and the women...well... bust- ing bosom and a full mug of ale can some- times be a bad combi- nation... sometimes. In comparison to our well groomed and well behaved neighbours, we siood out like a sore thumb. But if nothing else we provided ample entertainment to those around. All in all, the weekend has a great success! Battles were fought well, we learned many things about medieval times, but most importantly, we had a lot of fun. The next event is at the same time and the same place next year, and anybody is wel- come. Guaranteed, the Wolfpack will be there! If these activities sound interesting to you contact Jeanette at 614- 2333, or Call 614-1442 and ask for someone in the wolfpack. Sports and Clubs 1999/2000 Welcome to the 1999/2000 year of Over The Edge sports and clubs. My name _ is Jeremy Fung and | am the sports editor. This is my final year in the posi- tion, and in my degree, thus | will be extremely busy. Unfortunately this means | will be unable to cover many of the sport team's and club events. We already have one new sports writer who will be covering UNBC timberwolves _ basket- ball. That leaves about 30 organizations with- out anyone covering them, so we need more writers. This is a call to’ each of the teams and clubs, if you would like to have something about your organization in the paper, write it up and bring it in. Any sub- missions will be greatly appreciated. If you have no one in your organization willing to write and you want one of our writers to attend an event or to do an interview, feel free to contact me at 960- 5633, or by email, at fungj000 @unbc.ca. Write stories and write often. Good luck to all the teams and clubs.
