the street on his way from the theatre.
Mrs. Bracegirdle’s maid tried to warn him
as he left the theatre but he mistook her
tor a disreputable character-and pushed
her on one side. Meanwhile Lord Mohun
and Captain Hill were drinking again.
When the watch objected to them having
naked swords in the streets Lord Mohun
said that as a peer of the realm he had a
right to draw his sword and that Captain
Hill had lost his scabbard—which may
have been true. The watch retired per-
plexed.

In the middle of this along came Mount-
ford and Lord Mohun strode over men-
acingly towards him.

“What are you doing here?” he roared.

The actor explained that he was walk-
ing home and Lord Mohun mentioned
Mrs. Bracegirdle.

“Mrs. Bracegirdle is no concern of
mine!’ answered Mountford.

As he spoke, Captain Hill struck him an
unexpected blow with his fist and, as
he staggered, ran the sword through his
body.

A great outcry followed. The watch
arrived and took the trembling Lord Mo-
hun into custody. He was shaking violent-
ly as he gazed at the dying actor. But
Captain Hill — the actual murderer —
escaped in the confusion. Lord Mohun
was taken to the Tower and soon regained
his pose of aristocratic insolence. <A
coroner’s jury found them both guilty

~ of murder but Lord Mohun elected to

be tried by his peers. It told greatly in
his favour that he did not strike the fatal
blow and that he had been urging Hill to
apologize for some time. Elizabeth
Sandys gave damaging evidence against
him to prove his complicity in the kidnap-
ping plot but he contented himself with
questioning her about her character, know-
ing that this would influence his fellow
peers. He was acquitted and Captain Hill
was never found.

Seven years later Lord Mohun was
again charged with murder. After a wild
drinking party a group of six had gone
in sedan chairs to St. Martins-in-the-
Fields and had fought a midnight duel.
One man was fatally wounded. Lord
Mohun was arrested and charged along
with the Earl of Warwick. Again his

fellow peers let him off but advised him
to change his way of life.

For twelve years he lived quietly, ap
pearing in the House of Lords and speak
