| y/ _ Sports and Clubs A Part of the University TYLER CLARKE SPORTS AND CLUBS EDITOR UNBC’s Inter-Varsity Christian Fel- lowship head Troy Lee stresses that their club is welcome to anyone, re- gardless of their religion, much like the 60 or so other Inter-Varsity Christian fellowships prominent in various other colleges and universities in Canada. “We have Catholics, Protestants, and we have some people that have never stepped into a church in their lives.’ Roughly fourty percent of their mem- bers are international students, provid- ing the club a diverse background of people. The Christian Fellowship meets ev- ery week, on Wednesday, with a free meal for students, which will run un- til mid-November. They also meet on Sunday, with a free meal at Lee's house, At these events, there are book discus- sions for anyone interested. “There are pretty heated debates,’ said Lee. CristyKurjata,a member of the Inter- Varsity adds; “I haven't seen any actual yelling,’ with people striking up healthy _ debates, versus arguments. For the Wednesday get togethers they receive around 6-8 regular attend- ees, wherein the Sunday get togethers, they see about twenty to thirty people attending. “We have about fifty stu- : BELINDA LI dents involved at different levels,’ Lee added. : Lee says that anyone interested in these activities, are welcome to join in. For those worried that their religion, or lack thereof, would cause conflict, Lee establishes that they are reluctant to even use the word Christian, as it is a loaded word, with many possible meanings, Instead, he prefers to use the term Jesus followers. “We're pas- sionate about students becoming Jesus followers” he says, adding “and, God- who seeks to bring healing to all of the cosmos.’ That, and anyone, regardless ~of their faith, is more than welcome. to join, Beliefs will be brought to your at- tention, not forced upon you. The Inter-Faith Christian Fellowship has already been busy this year, orga- nizing a BBQ for new students in Sep- tember, and organizing movie nights. The movies aren't as religious as one might assume for a Christian Fellow- ship club, with the last few being Pieces of April, Open Water, and Anchorman. Lee says it's likely the next movie will be War of the Worlds, and will take part some time in November. Another upcoming event is a week- end long retreat, that they are currently organizing. This is a yearly event. “We usually get camps, but the last few Over the Edge Eleven 4, Mich Mich Bringing Pikachu and Chairman Mao together at last. STEPHANIE WILSON / ANDREW KURJATA MANAGING EDITOR / NEWS EDITOR 1. Green Day — Bullet in a Bible (live) Okay, you released American Idiot and it didn’t totally suck. Experience years the winters have been so brutal,’ that they've ended up in hotels, says Lee, This year, they plan the retreat at a winterized camp sight, sometime in January or February, Much like all the other events, this is open to anyone interested. “I've never laughed so hard in my life,’ says Tabatha Lundholm, an attendee of last year’s event, regarding the fun she had, They're also planning a lecture series, inviting a physicist in to talk about the idea of evolution and intelligent design. This would happen some time in Feb- ruary, and be put on by both the Chris- tian Fellowship, and the Inter-Faith Chapel, located next to the security office. In April, after final exams are done with, they're planning an expedition to the Lower Mainland, to join an envi- ronmental project for a week. This is part of the Whiterock projects, which include an organic farm, and environ- mental education. All of these events are funded by Lee's expense account, food donated, money raised by various organizations, and charity in general, as it is a chari- table organization. Many members of the Inter-Faith Christian Fellowship find themselves hanging out at the Inter-Faith Chapel at UNBC. “Tes a nice place. It's quite quiet, you can talk, study...’ says Kur- ‘jata. The Chapel is run by student ser- vices, and is headed by about a dozen ministers of different faiths, volunteer- ing their time to spread the word of Jesus. Lee theorizes that “spirituality is becoming a part of the University ex- perience.’ He says that the materialist world view isn't enough for the people of the world. People are thinking less about whether or not God exists. In- stead, they're searching for answers, like where they fit in the scheme of things. Kurjata adds that “It’s crucial in some form or another.’ With regards to the Christian Fel- lowship, Lee stresses that “We invite people into our community, we don't coerce them.’ As such, they invite anyone interested in this club to seek more information from the UNBC Inter-Faith Chapel, or e-mail them at ivef_unbc@yahoo.ca. 8.
