CASSIAR CADETS GO TO WH ITEHOR SE and look forward to getting together with ihe ¥ ANI Marching in the 1977 Sourdough Rendezvous Parade gave time for Cadets of the 2930 Cassiar Lions Army Cadet Corps to reflect on their first ' winter camping experience held at the Ro- bert Service Campground in Whitehorse. Twenty-one cadets, 13 female and 8 male, and their officers,-Captain Paul M. Wood and Lieutenant Marlene J. Wood flew to the Rend- ezvous Capital of the North on Friday, February 25th to begin an exciting adventure, camping out in the cold Yukon night. On Friday night, the Cadets were billeted in ¥ Cadet homes. Saturday morning, the Cassiar Cadets, along % with fellow Cadets from Yellowknife and Whitehorse were given a guided bus tour of the City. Local entertainer, Lyle Murdock of Frantic Follies fame, kept the Cadets entertained with his humorous monologue throughout the tour. Later, the Cadets were introduced and fitted into Artic Winter Survival Gear for their sojourn near the Yukon River. Four tents were erected under the trees and then Cadets attempted to prepare the evening meal from individual ration packs. (IRPS for short). The resourceful Cadets * managed to satisfy their hunger. Others made do by eating their IRPS snack pack. After supper, Cadets were allowed some free time to explore Whitehorse. Some went to the local cafe’s and others to see King Kong at the Yukon Theatre . Then it was lights out for all Cadets. ; Early Sunday morning, the Cadets got up to see that a 4 cm blanket of snow had covered their campsite. Undeterred, they perservered in preparing their breakfast, washing up, rolling sleeping bags, packing supplies, equipment and tents. They were eager to go swimming later ¥ in Takhini Hot Springs. After swimming, the Cadets ate a hurried lunch at the Colonel's and then prepared to march, - The Parade was the highlight of the Sour- dough Rendezvous and marked the end of the Cadet weekend. wo TES ED) VAC ZN, FERS so mi SAN Te eS 902 or till April 1st on all stock 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Mon. - Fri.: ‘Sat. 2k00spima-2 9-30 p.m. 718-7442 SSSR HSH GIRS ak Kesh ake eae ese SHEE HE OO SHIH a a A SI IC a ISIC KK a ae ae ae ¥ 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. - Dy poril 14, 15, 164 Old Lion’s Club Koom. Mr. Sundby is the Assistant Director of Pro- fessional Development, but his duties also include Learning Conditions and his work ranges from handling personnel cases to helping people negotiate contracts. This was Mr, Sundby’s first visit to the Stikine and his first impression was the physical one of the vastness and beauty of the area. and a realization of how far removed from Vancouver this District really is. Mr. Sundby said he had heard stories about the School District and was led to: believe the facilities were poor and so he wasn’t too surprised by the conditions he en- countered. He visited the Schools at Lower Post, Good Hope Lake, Cassiar, and Dease Lake and his impressions of the schools were “‘that there isn’t very much long ran- ge planning that has gone into this district :there isn’t too much long term commitment of any kind; everything 1s haphazard and short term basis. Cover the immediate year and don’t worry about the following year. It’s kind of disappointing when you look at it from the point of view of teachers. I can’t help but convey a message of lack of permanency, of transciency, and of let’s - not- worry - about - tomorrow sort of thing. It’s really a disappointing impression.” When asked about CORE curriculum and the impact it might have on the Stikine District, Mr. Sundby stated that this district is one that does not fit the kind of mediocre, average, middle class, orientation that CORE . curriculum takes. The CORE curriculum goals, as they. are printed, look quite harmless. They look like fairly idealistic objectives but the testing program that is to follow and, in fact, reinforce CORE curriculum will be most harmful because of the pressure on principals and teachers to make their schools meet the provincial standards without taking into account the Native child- ren, the new Canadians, or any~ other factors in the school makeup. Mr. Sundby stated that the public feels there is a need for improvement in the educational sys- tem and so the climate is right for some kind of change but that educators must point out the dangers of GORE curriculum and, in particular, the testing program that is to follow. eee It was unfortunate that time and distance did not per- mit Mr. Sundby to visit the schools at Telegraph Creek and Atlin, but from his short stay in the Stikine, he be- came more aware of the problems and teaching cond- itions in this district. This awareness was neatly summed up in a statement to a group of teachers in Cassiar, when he said,’ Frankly, I don’t envy youa bit!” LS FIRST BABY FOR NEW YEAR! I sat with Szilard. We joked alot. We went past some snowmobiles and stopped at a sort of station. After that we started up. the hill. When we got high up it was Scary on the turns. When we got to the powder tanks Mr.Church stood up and told us what they were. Then we started on our way again. When we finally got up they had some problems backing the bus in. They were working on the other side of the pit with 85 ton trucks and a number five shovel. The trucks kept coming and dumping the ore into the crusher. They kept beeping when they backed up. Then we looked down into the pit. Some men were getting explosives ready. Then when we were coming down they turned on a different road and we went to see the bottom of the crusher. Then we went down the hill. When we got back to school, Mr. Church gave us some samples and then we went home. Brian Grant Thank you to Mr. Church for a very enjoyable and ed ucational trip up to the mining site. : The Grade 3 Clas« Buttermilk Pancake Breakfast When: Saturday, March 12 at 9PM Where: To be announced Menu: Orange juice Buttermilk Pancakes Bacon = ) . With the exception of the odd mishap, the pat- rons were served with dispatch and flare. By midnight, sixteen. weary students and teachers had converted the Rec Hall back into what it was before.
