PERTAIN SEN LDR Naat LOR DD ESS A eee Ne “What do you do here?” he asked Wil son. “We write political propaganda; revolu- tionary I suppose you would call it, but it applies to Russia only.” “Why didn’t you write it in Russia?” Wilson smiled and made a deprecating gesture with his manicured hands. “We did. We are now exiles, refugees you might say.” “Leon too?” “Yes, he came before we did. There are ten more now on the high seas.” Despite the most intense, and adroit questioning, Glover could not get Wilson to admit that he knew Leon was making counterfeit money. “We understood that his photography was a hobby. We have no knowledge of him making money here.” Wilson replied with dignity. “We are, anarchists if you will, but we are certainly not counterfeiters. We know Mr. Leon had plenty of money but he told us it came from sympathisers, Russians, in the United States. We had no reason to question the truth of this state- ment.” POLICE SEARCH FOR EQUIPMENT The officers knew that the man spoke the truth. They produced records to prove that they. had only recently arrived at Nootka from Russia and since the notes had been circulating for almost a year they could not posibly have been mixed up in their manufacture. Besides, if they were partners in the crime with Leon, where was the outfit? It was not likely that they would hide it simply because Leon had gone away. Glover consulted the chart. It indicated a spot a mile or more back in the bush. The police left at once and began a search. All through the day the search continued. The outfit was not found. Two days passed; still they were no nearer to it. It was eleven days before Glover thrust a stick into a pile of brush and leaves at the foot of a huge tree. The stick encountered a hard object. A few minutes later and Leon’s counterfeiting plant was bared to view. The press was a masterpiece of simplicity. It had been specially designed and manu- factured for its illegal work. The important plates were there also. Glover and the ofh- cers took possession of their find. Leon’s personal effects were taken in charge by Constable McLeod. More than 1000 pieces of personal prop- erty, ranging from hydrometers, drawing in- struments, cameras, delicate scales and dies, even to darkroom cloths and spotlights, were taken by the police. PLANNED A REVOLUTION When Leon was brought to trial at Chi- cago and confronted with this evidence he gave up the fight. He revealed how he had planned to finance a Russian revolution by flooding the country with illegal currency. Thus the American public were to be given the honour of paying for the revolution! Marneek and Leon were sentenced to ten years each, and Swanson got five years. Thus ended one of the most abortive ideas ever fostered by anarchists. But for all of that, it is safe to say that no better spurious currency was ever put over on the American public. It fooled almost every- body, including Leon. A BOY went into a big drug store in the U.S. A. and asked: “Could you fix a dose of castor oil so the oil won’t taste?” “Certainly; won’t you have a glass of ice cream soda while you’re waiting?” cour- teously replied the assistant. Jackie drank the soda with relish. “Anything else?” asked the druggist. “No, nothing else but the oil,” the boy replied. “But you drank it,” was the smiling answer. “Gee whiz!” exclaimed Jackie. “I wanted that for dad!” Elk River Timber Co.
