LIONS DEN REPORT
By Dave Brocklebank
“*1984—Help Us Roar”
It would seem to the writer of this column
that in the recent past we have been meeowing, if
my view and public input I receive means any-
thing. The “Roar” that built the swimming pool,
the Lions Campground and various other projects
is still there, but we need to be drawn away from
the fireplace where we lay purring contentedly.
The way this can be done is for a bunch of new
“Toms’”’ to juice up our clan and for friends and
neighbours to offer suggestions or criticisms. New
members are needed!
We received a lot of compliments for the
Community Christmas Tree, Thank You! Unfor-
tunately it was a bit late being installed to achieve
the Fund Raising Goal, this year will be different!
If you want to see a tree—like the Coca-Cola
Commercial—look for the donation boxes next
December.
To all those people who helped with the tree
stand, the tree, the wiring, the decorating and the
co-operation and co-ordination needed for such a
project-A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU-—you
are too numerous to list, but you are known and
won’t be forgotten—again, thanks from the Lions
and the community.
The year 1983/84 is the Cassiar Lion’s 20th
Anniversary—and in addition to a special crystal
beer mug—we are having minted a $2 Cassiar
Trade Coin. When we first thought of this project,
the idea was a souvenier for the people of Cassiar.
Since the proposal was put forward and the mint
was contacted we have been approached by coin
dealers across the country for coins, and articles
on the coin and Cassiar are to be published in
coin magazines across North America and Austral-
ia, New Zealand and Europe. The idea was—these
coins could be used at face value—$2—(They are
larger than a silver dollar) for a whole year (1984)
in Cassiar, at any Lions function—the Curling
Club or the Lounge. It now seems there may be a
larger requirement for them outside of Cassiar!
They will hopefully be here for Monte Carlo
—gamble with Cassiar Coins rather than that
cheap paper stuff!
Before the order comes in we can order Sterl-
ing Silver Coins—one time only—at $35 each.
Their real value is not known—as with any scarce
coin—it is many times the original cost. (One coin
dealer told me a town of 3000 people in Manito-
ba did a trade dollar a couple of years ago. The $2
coin—in brass—is now sold through coin dealers at
$75). We can also order solid 10K Gold coins at
$400 and 24K gold at World Gold Price plus 25%.
Anyone wishing solid silver or gold coins please
contact Dave Brocklebank, Box 106, Cassiar,
778-7683 or at the Powerhouse AS SOON AS
POSSIBLE—before the order is processed at the
mint.
I would like to apologize for the cancellation
of the Hay Ride, Christmas Carol Sing, December
23rd. Several factors were against us—weather,
hay and traffic regulations. Hopefully next year it
can happen. Sure, would be nice if we could have
real horses pulling a real hay wagon full of kids!

LIONESS NEWS
By Pam Krawczyk
The Cassiar Lioness would like to thank all
the people who put so much time and effort into
this year’s Christmas Bazaar. We apologize for
the delay in our report and in expressing our ap-
. preciation. It seems this is the year of the breaks
for us (the cast kind, not the opportune kind) but
most of us are newly stitched, taped or stretched
back into shape and ready for the coming year.
We are happy to announce our new executive as
follows:
President — Tones Rita Brown
First Vice-P. — Lioness Mary Ryan
Secretary — Lioness Shirley Fournier
Treasurer — Lioness Shelly Overton
Tailtwister and P.R. — Lioness Pam Krawezyk
Tamer — Lioness Cecile Beaudry:
All Director — Lioness Hilda Cooper
After our slow beginning we have many good
things in store. The first of which is our annual
‘Skate-a-Thon’ in Feb. The proceeds go to the
"Timmy’s House’ in Vancouver which is where the
children (and parents) from outside of Vancouver
stay when using the hospital facilities. Next we
hope to participate in many of the Schmoo Daze
activities as well as supplying the Cotton Candy.
We are also applying for another license for T.V.
Bingo on W.S.T.V. These proceeds go to the im-
provement of our own Hospital and we hope to
have a more detailed report in the next Courier.
Some super ideas are hatching to help Cassiar-
ites survive spring (or the lack of) which we hope
everyone will enjoy. Finally we are planning to
hold a membership drive tea in the near future, so
if you’re a little bit bored with the same old thing
day after day (or a little bit crazy is good) and
you’d like to find out more about the Lioness’
look for our posters on the tea or phone one of
our members. We’d love to hear from you.
Thanks again Cassiarites for your wonderful
a SUDDOTE:

and welcoming Yasir Arafat as the legitimate government
of the Palestinian people, in return for guaranteed long-
term oil contracts from OPEC. Within days of this diplo-
matic reversal, firms in these countries have received
hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts from OPEC
countries -- an additional reward for espousing the Arab
cause.
In. 1979, when Joe Clark announced that Canada would
move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the Arabs
reacted by threatening to cancel hundreds of millions of
dollars worth of contracts with Canadian firms, and to
withdraw billions from Canadian Banks. The threat was
that the Canadian economy would be destroyed, literally
within hours. Joe Clark changed his mind. —
Only America remained a stalwart supporter of Israel.
And even there support is crumbling, under the grip of the
Arab reach. Time was when only Israel had access to state-
of-the-art- American weaponry; but in land-mark decisions
in the late 70’s, the American Senate voted to supply such
technology to Saudi Arabia as well as Israel. The removal
of Alexander Haig from the position of Secretary of State,
and his replacement by George Schultz, has installed a
strong pro-Arab in a senior government post formerly oc-
cupied by a staunch pro-Israeli.
It is not only on the diplomatic front—oil for pro-Arab
policy—that the war has been waged. Staggering amounts
of money have poured into the Arab countries from high-
price oil sales: and, even after these countries have
mounted some of the biggest construction. programs ever
undertaken; after they have expended enormous sums on
arms, sometimes buying, nota ship, but a navy; after they
have implemented lavish social assistance, education and
health-care schemes—they still have billions left over to in-
vest. The Government of Saudi Arabia alone, for instance,
has $380 million a day, every day, to ‘place’ in the West.
This money has gone to buy land, buildings, companies,
banks and other financial institutions. It is estimated that,
if all the Arab-owned land in the Houston, Texas area (an
area where Arabs feel at home and are welcomed by the
people who formerly felt at home in Atabia when they de-
veloped the oil potential there) were put together, it
would be larger than the state of New Jersey. Just how ex-
tensive the Arab investment in Western countries is, is un-
known, because all transactions have a secrecy clause in
them. Even the American government has no real notion
of how much of the Américan economy is controlled: by
Arabs. But that it is extensive is beyond question: Arab
interests now control the petroleum process from the
well-head to the corner gas pump, just as the American
‘Big 7’ used to do, but do no longer. And the oil is ship-
ped exclusively on Arab-owned tankers.
Most ominous of all is that Arab money has been reaching
out to buy nuclear technology - from the French, from
the Germans, from the Americans. The government of
Kuwait now owns an American company that supplies
plutonium to the Pentagon; Kuwait now has access to the
same thermo-nuclear technology as America. Saudi Arabia,
Kuwait, Pakistan and Iraq all have nuclear weapons cap-
ability. Never again will Israel be able to use its atomic
weapons as a lever to win American support against the
Arab states: that threat is balanced; and: over balanced
now, on the other side.
Most North Americans are -totally oblivious to this de-
velopment. We just don’t take those fellows wearing long
dresses and riding camels to the sound of Sigmund Rom-
berg seriously, and we go along blissfully under the de-
lusion that we are masters of the world, and masters of
our own fate. This book convincingly and lucidly rubs our
noses in fealty,
