March 28, 2007 _ St. Patrick’s Day Cabaret a Hit and Miss Affair — CAMERON ORR News Eprror The Cabaret at the CN Centre on this last St. Patrick’s Day turned surprisingly fun, thanks in large part to the fabulous crowd who turned up to celebrate St. Pat- rick, and no thanks to a confusing concession set up and question- able attendance rules. The doors opened at 7:30 and the first 800 guests were prom- ised lucky St. Patrick’s Day hats. The staff on hand were friendly and helpfully guided us to all the coat checks and ticket checks as we made our way down the stairs to the dance floor. At the base of the stairs a fellow handed out the Irish hats and we made our way onto the dance floor. The initial reaction to the set up of the event was confusion. The stand where you received your beer had large signs raised above it giving details for desig- nated drivers. So I concluded it was a DD stand. I made my way to a mixer cart and asked for a beer, where I was directed back to the DD stand, which was actually the beer stand. The DD signs above the beer stand told the drivers to go to the concession stand a few feet away. Confused yet? Well, what can you do? All you can do is sit back and enjoy the St. Patrick’s Day green beer. Except there was none. Signs posted near the drinks stated that green beer was not being offered due to health and allergy con- cerns. Not that I’ve met anyone allergic to food colouring, it still would have been nice to have the option, with regular beer on the side for those requiring it. Well, so far not a great start to the evening. Even worse when it was discov- ered that drink tickets were five dollars -apiece. Not impressive if you wanted a cooler when they are pouring the beverage out of two litre containers of eight dollar bottles. Lastly, for criticism, a strange attendance policy was in place which made the night nearly un-. bearable. Being so early, our group thought to leave and return at a later time. Trying to leave, we were quickly stopped by security, who mentioned to us that if we left, we would not be granted re- entry unless we cared to purchase additional tickets. _I don’t know about you, dear reader, but to pay twenty dollars to come to an event and be a pris- oner does not sound like a good idea.
