Pursued by whooping cowboys firing guns and rifles, terrorized horses, with packs and bedrolls hung loosely from saddles so they'd be tossed in all directions to add to the drama of the scene, were headed to- wards the mounting flames now rapidly at- tacking dry brush and resinous pines. Straight for the rickety movie tower they thudded, straight for the movie man who ground away supremely unconscious of his peril. Next moment there was a rending crash. With flaying arms and legs he descended amongst splintered props and debris under stampeding hoofs that swiftly ground films and camera to pulp. Display- ing a distressing lack of photogenic sense the terrorized horses failed to stop when the show was over. Instead they spilled with unearthly squeals and terrorized snorts down the valley communicating their fear to the remaining horses which stampeding in turn sought safety in the deepest muskegs and most impenetrable forest, where sweat- ing, cursing cowboys wallowed for days in an attempt to round them up and salvage the equipment. Fire-scarred forests, lost horses, snagged broncs, scattered bedrolls hanging tattered and torn on spreading branches or trodden into the muskeg, along with a badly-mauled and angry camera- man were the net result of th’s attempt to carry Hollywood into the wilds. With predatory wolves hanging on their flanks and devouring gaunt horses that daily died or were abandoned, the bedraggled adventurers, abandoning mired and useless tractors, limped in a series of forced and painful marches to the lonely Hudson’s Bay post at Whitewater. Unused to muskegs and continual wading through bogs and icy streams the pack- horses were succumbing daily to the ravages of hoof-rot and swamp-fever. Thirty died in a couple of days. By September 27th only 80 of the original 130 odd head that had plunged into the wilderness were fit to load. “We have horses enough—but not enough horse strength,” bemoaned Bedaux, “to carry our food and equipment.” ACE COMSTOCK WM.
