NORTHWEST TERRITORIES 1-877-336-3940 Over the Edge is the official independent publishing media of students at the University of Northern British Columbia. 2011 NUdie Calendar Fundraiser! As such, it is our mandate to report on issues of interest to students in the North- ern Region. We encourage all students, both on the main and regional campuses to submit to Over the Edge. Over the Edge is part of the Canadian Uni- versity Press network of papers, otherwise known as CUP. For the past 3 years, PGPIRG has pushed the boundaries and rallied people together to support the community. Each year, the Nudie calendar has highlighted the core values of social and environmental activism while remaining fun, and this year is no exception! In the past students have flaunted their nudity to teach people about healthy eating, volunteering, alternative transportation and all the little things we do to make the world a better place. This year we would like to showcase the people and clubs of UNBC, as well as what we do for our community. CUP is an organization that is entirely owned by member papers, and provides such services as a news wire and advertis- ing to Over the Edge. Over the Edge is published every second week during the fall and winter semesters. Each interested club will have a photo and a 50 word description of their club. All the proceeds will go towards St.Vincent. But, we all know that isn’t going to happen. At the begining of the se- mester we had loads of people submitting articles to Over the Edge, but that trend seems to be fading fast! Why is that guys? Is everyone too busy with school, or do you all lack inspiration? Whatever the reason, we here at OTE would love to recieve some more submis- sions. We are always looking for feed back and student involvement, so do not hesitate to contact me or any of our other editors! We would love to have a bigger opinions section because your point-of- view is important to us. Did you know that we also have a classifieds section? | bet you didn’t! If you have textbooks to sell, and apartment to rent, or an old car to get rid of, we can help. It only costs $5 to have anything you want (well, not anything) listed in the most read paper on campus. Also, Over the Edge offers free advertisement to all UNBC related groups. This means that if your club is hosting an event, and you want to get the word out OTE can helo do that! All you need to do is send us a PDF of your poster and we will make sure to put in in our next issue - just be mindful that we are a bi-weekly publication whcih means paying attention to publication dates is ex- tra important. If you have any questions just email us @ over-the- edge@unbc.ca. If you haven't noticed already, this is our Halloween issue. | hope you enjoy it and are able to find some good costume ideas just intime for everyone’s favorite holliday! -She/. Ly Petersen “Puple”: An Editorial Wear purple to show your supporrt SHELBY PETERSEN EDITOR IN CHIEF It is important to remember that just because someone is a member of the LGBTQ community, does not make them any less of a human being. People, whether they are gay or straight, need to be treated equally which is overarching message of the Day of Purple. Using gay as a put down or a derogatory term has a myriad of consequences one of which is that it perpetuates the notion that people of a different sexual persuasion mean less or are stupid. So, wear purple on Wednesday, October 20. Wear purple if you are gay, wear purple if you are straight. Wearing purple will send a strong message to those people who are hateful and homophobic that you demand equality for everyone and that no one should feel so ostracized from their community and family that they think suicide is the only option.
