I prepared a very fine supper of
canned stew and even had a dessert.
Being very tired. I went to bed at
sunset, after bathing my aching feet
in a nearby creek. I immediately
fell into an exhausted sleep. Some
time during the night, I awoke with
a start to find a small animal had
been chewing my hair, apparently to
obtain the salt from perspiration.
Not knowing just what I was fac-
ing, I reached for my high-powered
rifle and flashlight (yes, I even had
that) and sat motionless in the dark
-with my rifle to my shoulder and
the flashlight held along the barrel,
when I heard a movement in the
corner of the cabin, I flashed the
light, and seeing two eyes, pulled
the trigger. I would like to add a

The blast was deafening and [
thought for a moment that my ear
drums were bursting. Several tin
cans fell off shelves to add to the
din. I did get my animal though, or
what was left of it. I didn’t recog-
nize the type, but did realize what
had caused the rank odor in the
cabin. I returned to my bunk conf-
dent that I had handled that situa-
tion with dispatch. It was not so.
I had no more sleep that night, as
there were several other bush rats
using the same home, and they cer-
tainly can make a lot of noise with
their hind feet. Once or twice, I
dozed off to sleep only to awaken
with a start when a rat would thump
his feet. I seem to remember having
terrible nightmares where large ugly
bush rats with luminous green eyes
were eating my hair.
