There have been fires in Yukon recently when people have brought their propane tanks inside for warmth to increase the vapour pressure. Many Yukon mobile home owners use propane for heating. cooking, refridgeration, clothes drying and lighting. They can experience difficulties at low temperatures be- cause the propane liquid won't vapourize to produce gas at -40 degrees or colder. Bringing the tank inside to warm up is very hazardous because the sudden increase in pressure can easily pop the tank's relief valve and the gas will leak out. The pressure in the tank is three and a half pounds per square inch at -40 degrees C. and about 120 pounds per swuare inch at room temperature. Propane gas is one and a half times heavier than air, so it settles at ground level and can flow like water down stairs. A leaking tank upstairs could easily result in a fire in the basement with the gas contacting the furnace flame. ) Any source of ignition, such as pulling a light switcl could also result in a fire if contact is make with leaked gas. To meet Yukon building regulations, propane tanks of 1,000 gallons or more are required to have vapourizers which will keep the gas pressure up in cold weather. Smaller tanks are often protected from the extreme cold by being packed in snow. This is all right provided they. are protected against damage and the regulator is protected. “To grandma’s.
