November 4 2002 Nugss U Over The Edge Page 7 I’m Poor, Piss Off By Stephanie Wilson A few days ago, | received a letter from UNBC. No big deal, until | reached the paragraph at the end which stated, “Of course, we are writing to ask you to give UNBC your sup- port. In addition to the priori- ties outlined, you can also give to an area of your own inter- est, with the assurance that UNBC will put them to very good use. Think of UNBC as an investment in the future of our communities -and our citi- zens.” What?! Am | not investing in UNBC and my future when | paid my tuition fees and stu- dent fees at the beginning of September? | thought | was, but apparently, UNBC wants me to give them more money! Note to the university: if you want people to donate $50 - $1 000, do not send your “Yes! Tomorrow’s Leaders’ are important to me! | want to make a difference...” pam- phlets to students. | am one of ‘Tomorrow’s Leaders, and frankly, | cannot afford to donate an additional $50 to $1 000 to UNBC and pay my tuition fees, student fees, and buy textbooks. Sorry. And | think most students are in the same situation. Isn’t there something intrinsically wrong with asking tuition-paying stu- dents to donate large sums of money to their university? If you want to ask my par- ents to donate money, ask them, not me. When | graduate and have a well-paying job, | might donate money to UNBC. But until then, I’m more worried about being able to cover the cost of textbooks next semester. This year, NUGSS recog- nizes over thirty clubs. There are several types of clubs, such as academic, special interest, and sports clubs. Official recognition by NUGSS has its advantages for clubs. An official club is not only eligi- ble to get funding, but can also establish a bank account at Scotia Bank, and receive NUGSS support in putting on events. We can help you with booking tables, photocopying posters, etc. Below is a list of many of the recognized NUGSS clubs. Bluescreen Returns to PG By Dana Schwehr Since Anthony Voitik, a.k.a. Bluescreen, graduated from UNBC, he has been a very busy person. Just working a full time job is not enough for this highly motivated guy; he also has a record deal with Shadow Records, and is start- ing his own record label, Outlet Records. Over the Edge man- aged to catch up with Bluescreen at DD4, the most recent Vinylution party, and interview him to see what he’s been up to lately. TICKETS AT DOOR OR $4 WITH NON* PERISHABLE FOOD ITEM BROUGHT TO YOU BY FUTURE CENTS / PROJECT M*A°Y*R*ESH Anthony Voitik has been making music for a very long time. He started making elec- tronic music in the eighth grade, and that is not the only medium he has used. He wrote songs for an alternative band, but that didn’t last too long since the drummer rarely showed up for practice. The band broke up, and Voitik sold his guitar to buy a keyboard. Since then, he has been per- forming under the name DJ Cypher, perfecting his vinyl mixing and live performance skills. He has released several independent albums, as well a s Undercurrents, his first release for Shadow Records. His lat- est project is his own record label, $5 Outlet Records, which is a pro- ject designed to showcase BC talent, on vinyl. Outlet will search out underground artists who are not getting the recog- nition they deserve, and pro- vide them with the opportunity to publish their original music on vinyl records, along with Bluescreen’s own releases. According to Bluescreen, “l found it so hard [to get a record deal]. | really struggled. A lot of people are doing this just in their basements and stuff, just for fun. They could get exposure, and | want to give them that’. Currently, Outlet has two artists signed, Bluescreen and Mike Dubs, as well as six DJs attached to the label. All this drive and passion for music has to come from some- where. Bluescreen’s main musical influences include artists like Jim Morrison, Billy Travel On An Amazing International Program! Most people would consider this to be odd, since both artists were involved in completely different genres of music. “My main influences come from individuals who want to excel, and express themselves creatively, if that’s even a word. They have this background ensemble behind them, but really, they’re the dri- ving force. Electronic music is the perfect solitary way of expression. I’m not saying the Doors suck, I’m saying that Jim Morrison is behind it all. | get my influence from people who really mean it.” Of course, since Bluescreen is an elec- tronic artist, he has influences in that genre as well, especial- ly Ed Rush and Optical, a pair of drum n’ bass artists. Anyone who has been in the music industry for long periods of time knows that to survive, one’s sound has to evolve and change. To not change is to commit musical suicide. Bluescreen is no exception to this rule, changing even his spin name when it was required. He started out as DJ Cypher, but unfortunately had to drop that name, as someone else already had it. The name Bluescreen was inspired by the fact that right after Voitik found a record published by someone called Cypher, he turned around and saw the blue screen of a television set. It would seem to be a good name, too. “It’s so diverse. You can think of it as in movie pro- duction, you can lay so many things in front of a blue screen and create optical illusions. It’s like a palette for me, really’. Musical evolution was also inevitable. Bluescreen started out with “platypus records wannabe trance”, and diversi- fied to include many genres of electronic music, including speed garage, trance, and house. Mixing genres into hybrids has also proved fruitful and challenging for him. Music for Bluescreen is the ultimate method for expressing himself. Its a medium to be used for transmitting his ener- gy to others, to be enjoyed by everyone. In his opinion, elec- tronic music is more than crit- ics give it credit for being; it is a way to translate what one hears inside one’s head for others to enjoy.
