OUTSIDE A small weather-
beaten tent, standing in a row of
tents at an English fair, a disconso-
late fortune teller sat surveying the
carnival scene around him with an
apathy in contrast to his flamboy-
ant signs and shabby but striking
black cloak, gaudily lined in striking
purple.

His signs outdid those of his
gypsy rivals in pretentious claims of
forecasting the future based on won-
_ derful and supernatural gifts inher-
ited from ancestors over hundreds of
years.

The blare of carnival noises, the
glare of carnival lights, failed to stir
him from his despondency. The
aside of a noisy barker who ceased
his appeal to the crowd long enough
to turn his head and ask, ‘‘What’s
