River. They had that day just passed
Selkirk, when the old man suggested
that two of them go ashore and see if
they could get a bear, or in fact any
game that would replenish their
larder. Leaving this young fellow to
watch the boat, the old man and the
other Swede went ashore. In about 25
minutes the old man returned and
said that they had shot a bear, and
that it would be necessary for him to
go ashore, too, and help pack in the
meat.

The young man jumped ashore,
and the old man suggested that he
walk ahead, which he did. However
he had not proceeded far, when a
sixth sense seemed to tell him that
something was wrong. He turned
around toward the old man, at the
same time the old man was drawing a
bead on him with his .22 rifle. The
young Swede ducked, but not fast
enough, and received the small pellet
on the bone at the back of his ear.
He at once rushed the old man and
threw him to the ground, then took
to his heels as fast as he could. After
he had run a short distance he decided
to remove his boots, thinking not only
to gain speed, but also to avoid
making too much noise.

Once more on the rowboat he
crossed the river as fast as he could
and ran to the first building he saw,
which happened to be a restaurant
run by the two women present.

Hall at once notified the Mounted
Police.

When the police arrived, they
questioned the young Swede and then
asked him to accompany them across
the river to the scene of the shooting
He was able to take them to the same
spot, but no trace of the other two
men was found, although they spent
several hours hunting around, especi-
ally for the younger man whom they
rightly concluded had been done away
with.

The Mounties now hired a native
tracker, and two or three days later
he uncovered the body of the un-
fortunate young man, who had been
shot through the head, and his body
covered with branches and leaves.

The police now set a watch for the
old man. Constables were placed at
frequent intervals along the river
bank, all provided with binoculars.
A day or two later one of the con-
stables observed a small raft hugging
the far shore, and being propelled by
a solitary occupant.

It was the old man. He was taken
back to Dawson and eventually hung
in the jail yard. * *
